earthquake activity

by MJD-S

Share

Just about to go to sleep when I got woken up by a 3 in Kanagawa. Was a 4 in Osaka and Kyoto and a 5 in Wakayama. Second big tremor this evening (earlier one was at about 7:30 pm).

We are being warned of tsunami activity along the Kanto coast.

12:10am update: they are expecting a one metre wave to hit the Wakayama coast in a short while.  Mie and Aichi also have been given warnings.

In both English and Japanese people in these areas are being told to immediately get to a high place.

12:30am update: so far no reports of fire or injuries.

Also they don’t expect more tremors.

Earlier today: [via Mainichi News]
A strong earthquake hit western Japan and surrounding areas Sunday evening, with weather officials issuing tsunami warnings to Mie and Wakayama prefectures.

The earthquake hit shortly after 7 p.m., and its intensity was lower-5 on the 7-point Japanese scale in Shimokitayama, Nara Prefecture and Shingu, Wakayama Prefectures, on the Kii Peninsula, Meteorological Agency officials said.

They warned Mie and Wakayama prefecture residents of tsunami up to 50 centimeters high. But the warnings were lfited a few hours later.

The tremor’s magnitude is estimated to be 6.9 on the Richter scale.

The center of the earthquake was some 10 kilometers deep and located off the Kii Peninsula in the Pacific Ocean.

The quake registered 4 on the Japanese scale in other parts of Nara and Wakayama, Shiga, Gifu, Osaka and Aichi prefectures. (Mainichi and wire reports, Japan, Sept. 5, 2004)

  • I felt a little bit of the 19:00 earthquake here in Kyoto, but I went to bed around 23:00 and never felt the second, more pronounced earthquake.  My friends who stayed awake longer than I, told me about it this morning.

            • That’s the downside of living so far away from you all - I miss out on all the fun of the world being angry. We are lucky if we get any rain here these days. The closest I’ve got to an earthquake in recent times was the Newcastle one in 1989.

                • I hardly noticed the first, but I’ll never forget the second one around midnight. Of course that’s not because of how strong it was, but because my wife was going into labor then!
