Well that was a bloody long trip - lots of waiting around airports to get on planes - cruising thru Narita was a breeze after the initial panic of missing the Narita Express (literally by seconds - I could almost touch it!!!) But I’ve made it to Adelaide.
It’s been about 4 years since I’ve been here - and I’d forgotten just how small it is. Was looking for the city centre - and I almost missed it. I’d also forgotten just how flat it is - the town spreads out across a big plain ending in a sweeping shoreline on one side and a small mountain range on the other.
Not surprisingly I’m going thru a bit of culture shock. Everything seems so familiar - yet is different. I’m not really in tune with my surroundings - I feel like a bit of a tourist really. Had no clue how to get to Glenelg where my Nana lives from the airport - had to ask for information - which is a little bit embarrassing considering that I was born and grew up here.
One bis shock is finding out how expensive some things have become since the GST (g-something sales tax) was introduced - bloody $7.50 for a magazine??? I pay that for imported magazines in Tokyo!! Are they insane??? Although I admit that I just passed a fruit and vegeatable store and you could buy half a melon for about 2 bucks - so I guess it evens out in the end. Oh - damn the strength of the Aussie dollar too - got a pretty crappy exchange rate.
Still I’m here and safe (although stressed and exhausted) gotta catch up on some work (never ends) and then when my Nana gets back from her pokie trip going to her place and then later on I hope to be tucking into a home-cooked meal…
Oh just a notice for the j-ster and GG - they are still playing INXS on the radio here - can you believe it???

INXS - on JJJ? OMG.
Is the new INXS with whatisname now the new lead singer, or the original…. Did I tell you that I went drinking with Tim Ferris and some chick one night in Brisbane.. it was so much fun.
Glad that you made it safely. Culture shock’s a surprise, isn’t it? I feel it when I go back to the US, too.
Glad you made it safely. Bet it’ll be nice to get a chance to practice your tuna tossing on a real tuna tossing field! Or is it a pitch? ring? hmmm…
No Bob, in Aussieland we have perfected the art of tuna tossing and there a whole stadiums dedicated to the sport.. watching and participating - SP bookmakers delight.. a fine example can be seen in Melbourne - it is called the MCG.
Hey, INXS absolutely belongs in the pantheon of great bands. I can still remember when Shabooh Shoobah hit the States, they were so cool, and got a reputation as one of the greatest live bands since The Who.
INXS - before he hooked up with Kylie Minogue, Michael Hutchence was having a fling with Paula Yates (I think that’s her name), a second-division British celebrity mostly famous for being married to Bob Geldof. They came to the hotel where I was working part-time for dirty weekends. All the staff knew about it, and then suddenly, the news hit in the tabloids. Sorry, random story, but somewhat relevant. That album KICK still rocks, by the way.
