In the renovation groove

keitai183.jpgWandering around Broadway in Nakano, searching for a Saint Saiya gashapon vending machine so that the Boy can complete his collection, we cam across this shop that offers to renovate your keitai (mobile phone). Most of the designs were stock-standard ones, some anime characters (no Cowboy Bebop unfortunately), some talento, many many Disney characters and some comon brands - such as Coke. Given these images I wondered about copyright issues, did they pay for the stock pictures, or are they used without permission? Must admit that I wasn’t that impressed by either the selection or the quality, most of them did not have good placement on the image, which suggests that they haven’t been edited to fit the shapes of the phones.

So how do they do it? Unfortunately this will remain a mystery for now, as the main in the stall was a bit scary looking so I didn’t ask. It looks as though the images are transferred to some kind of plastic, which is then shrink-wrapped to fit the shape. But this usually involves heating - so I wonder if it affects the phone. Next time I come across one I must ask - it’s driving me crazy not to know how…

This doesn’t seem to be really popular at the moent, but I suspect that it’s just a matter of time, after the keitai strap and stickers phases we have been/are going through. It’s be cooler if you could design your own image for your phone - must check this out too…

Also on the renovation front, I been working on a site Dagmusic.com and I’ve almost finished it, just need to upload the Japanese section and whip the breadcrumbs into paying attention to the style that I have given them, instead of just doing what they want. The interesting part of this renovation is that the 4 sections that are to be regularly updated by people who are code-clueless, are now based on the Movable Type blogging system. It was sooo easy to turn MT into a mini content management system - I may recommend this to other clients who have smallish sites that need to be updated regularly, but are managed by peeps who can’t html (as for me while I love designing and building sites, I’m not so keen on maintaining them). It just worked so beautifully! Just bunged the stripped back code into the Dreamweaver file, chucked the whole lot back into the MT template and voila instant CMS!

Of course doing this site prompted me into laying out my blog properly - although as you know that was not without it’s drama! I think the issue was with the Age of Innocence entry, where I had included a table for the pictures, in the previous template I had omitted the

< table > < /table >

tags (because it didn’t like to work properly), but I just put them back in and it all seems hunky-dory now…

I’m hoping to be able to do some “self-renovation” after the next couple of days…a nice long soak in the bath, apply a different lotion to each part of my body screaming out for attention, and maybe just lie in bed reading non-text related books for most of the day…
