Mochi claims 3 this year

by MJD-S

[via news.com.au]

THREE Japanese died and 12 others were hospitalised in Tokyo and neighbouring prefectures after gagging on sticky rice cakes traditionally eaten during the New Year’s holidays, officials said today.

The three men, aged 58, 76 and 85, died from suffocation after choking on “mochi” rice cakes on New Year’s Day, a Chiba prefectural police spokesman said on condition of anonymity. Chiba is located just east of Tokyo.

Twelve Tokyo residents have been taken to the hospital after choking on mochi since December 26, including eight today, a Tokyo Fire Department official said. None died.

Every year, some Japanese die after getting mochi stuck in their throats. Mochi, made of highly compressed sticky rice, is typically grilled and wrapped in dried seaweed, or served in a soup called “ozoni”.

Last year, six elderly people died and 25 others were hospitalised in Tokyo after being unable to swallow or remove mochi from their throats.

Officials issue annual warnings about the risks of eating mochi, urging people to take small bites, chew well and drink plenty of liquids.

Some never learn…

Added spice....

  • This is my favorite yearly statistic.  Sure it is a little gruesome, but it is one of those “only in Japan” classic tales.

BTW catching up on blogs while my 500 emails are downloading.  ggrr
