Kristen gave us the how to on organizing a postal delivery online. Well here is the phone version. The post office site completely spat the dummy over my name (what’s a gal with 4 names gonna do?) - so I braved the phone.

Good news! You don’t have to speak to a live person.

Not so great news - the recorded voice is fast and gets grouchy if you don’t obey the commands fast enough. However with a bit of preparation you can do this with no Japanese ability even!

First of all have a gander at the piece of paper the postal delivery person left. If you fill this out before you call you should be able to sail right through.

Here the phone number you have to call is listed. (Note: don’t call this number in the pic unless you live in Hiratsuka (~^) )

(1) Write your post/zip code in here.

(2) Your phone number.

(3) Here you list the date the first delivery attempt was made. So if it was April 12 the number becomes 0412.

(4) In the top left hand corner you’ll see a number - probably a few numbers are printed and the rest hand written. Pop that number in here.

(5) This is the day you want it to be delivered on.

(6) This is the time you want it to be delivered.

1 - between 9am and 12 - but you must call before midnight the previous day
2 - between 12 and 2pm - call before 10am
3 - 2pm and 5pm - call before midday
4 - 5pm and 7pm - call before 4pm
5 - 7pm - 9pm - call before 6pm
0 - if you don’t care what time - give em a call before 6pm

Right now you have your piece of paper filled out - pick up the phone and dial. First you will hear The Voice rambling off something. Don’t panic just press any number on the phone and you’ll progress. The numbers on the form correspond with the steps on the phone. The only difference is that some of the answers will be repeated back to you, with a cute “desho ne?” at the end. If you are careful when entering the numbers you should be ok.

When you’ve entered all the details there is some more rambling. Just hang up at that point.

All that is left is to wait by the door for your package!
