No tsunami warning has been issued - although we are expecting a serious of aftershocks.
Magnitude was 7.0, epicentre in Akita ken.
Rated on the Shindo scale at 3 in Tokyo and Chiba, with areas closer to Iwate 5 and 4.
The Tohoku shinkansen has stopped.
Lifelines such as water, gas and electricity have stopped in certain areas of Iwate ken.
Update 9:10 am: An aftershock of 4 has shaken Tohoku.
Update 9:16 am: Phone connections have become dodgy in Iwate.
The 8:43 am quake went for about 30 seconds.
Warning for another quake has been issued for Miyage, Iwate, Akita and Yamagata prefectures. Move away from shelves and large objects. Get under tables.
Update 9:26 am: There was a weak 5 in the same area. Still no tsunami concerns.
Update 9:35 am: Reports of damage and injuries are starting to filter in - although NHK has not been able to contact some areas yet. Injuries have come from elevators stopping and from traffic accidents.
They’ve got a helicopter flying over a part of Iwate now - everything is looking ok. Still waiting on reports however.
Update 9:53 am: A bridge is being reported has having collapsed in Kurihashi.
Update 9:56 am: An aftershock of 3 has just been recorded. There have been a series of smaller aftershocks ranging from 1-2 as well.
Update 10:04 am: NHK are now showing some landslides in Iwate - fortunately they have missed people and homes.
An aftershock of 4 has been recorded.
Update 10:37 am: 2 deaths have been reported from Fukushima.
Update 10:43 am: There has been another 4 in the area. Tsunami warning issued.
Update 10:45 am: Tsunami warning canceled. Expecting more quakes.
Update 10:58 am: Aftershock of 3 reported.
Update 12:35 pm: Aftershocks ranging from 1-4 continue and more are expected. Occasional warnings to take cover continue to be issued.
Update 12:47 pm: 2 deaths, 78 injured at this stage.
