If it’s not one thing it’s another as strong winds rattle the windows and huge amounts of rain are expected to blast the industrial grime from our walls.

I don’t mind typhoons as much as earthquakes - but then I’m not in Okinawa or Kyushu. 5 people have already been claimed by this current one moving along Western Japan (#17? #18?).

It has always struck me a little amusing how many Japanese people I’ve met who love to talk about the weather. The Boy himself likes nothing better than stating the obvious to me all day long “It’s hot! It’s cold!” as if I was somehow deficient in the area of gauging climatic differences for myself.

On the other hand when you have weather that threatens to take off the TV antenna on the house next door (when will they fix that bloody thing the metallic screeching noise drives me and the neighbourhood dogs nuts every time!) - it actually makes for quite a damn fascinating topic.

  • People who live in Melbourne also seem to talk about the weather. In Queensland, if somebody walked around all day saying “It’s hot” then they would get slapped on a regular basis..

    • Quoted from George Mikes, a Hungarian journalist who moved to England and wrote “How to be an Alien” in 1945: “The Weather:
This is the most important topic of the land. Do not be misled by memories of your youth when, on the Continent, wanting to describe someone as exceptionally dull, you remarked; ‘He is the type whow ould discuss the weather with you.’ In England this is an ever)interesting, even thrilling topic, and you must be good at discussing the weather.
      Examples for converstaion:
      ‘Lovely day isn’t it?’
      ‘Isn’t it beautiful.’
      ‘The sun…’
      ‘Isn’t it georgeous?’
      ‘Wonderful, isn’t it?’
      ‘It’s so nice and hot…’
‘Personally, I think it’s so nice when it’s hot- isn’t it?’
      ‘I adore it - don’t you?’ “

      • Oh, and my sister went to Melbourne and mentioned that the weather was similar to England…
