After a very full-on two weeks I was looking forward to finally having a bit of a sleep in this morning. Of course this was not meant to be.
I was woken up by this very odd tapping sound on the metal front door. In my half awake daze I tried to ignore it, but it was so persistent! Then I started having the thought that someone was trying to pick the lock!
So obviously I had to get up then to check. Grabbing a hefty boot, I approached the peephole cautiously. I look through it.
Nothing.
I check the mail slot in case the wind was moving it.
Nope.
Then I glance further down towards the floor. There seems to be a very odd looking shoe there in the genkan.
It moves!
And then I realize it’s not some exotic type of shoe, but rather my turtle Spike!
Now turtles are famous for escaping but here is the really weird thing - for months he’s been in a much smaller tank sitting on the floor. The drop would have been about 40 cms. It just so happens that the night before he (and Jet) had been transferred to their new humungous tank - which with the stand - stand about a metre off the floor.
I have no idea what must have been running through his little turtle mind to make such an escape attempt.
But now I make sure that the tank is covered before I go to sleep.

snot a turtle, s’a terrapin.
Wasn’t the new white 20 hole doc boot, was it?
Hi angela - I don’t think they count as terrapins when they are the size of your hand. Spike and Jet are both Red Ear Sliders.
Joey - I may be useless in the mornings (as you know) however I can spot the difference between a green turt and a 20 hole white Doc
