Typhoon #9 whacked us pretty hard

by MJD-S

I can no longer sleep after a night of constant waking up from things going boom. The winds continue to whip the rain into us.

We still have no running water here. We lost all “lifelines” last night, and this is the last one to come back. It times like this when I realize I take simple actions like turning on a tap for a glass of water, or flushing the toilet very much for granted. We have the internet again though! (Obviously).

Luckily the river didn’t break it’s banks and we didn’t have too much flooding, right near my apartment. Other places in Hiratsuka are flooded. Earlier this morning several areas in Suginami-ku in Tokyo flooded. The centre of the typhoon is now in Gunma and several areas there are flooding quite badly.

Some train services in Tokyo have resumed, but many are still stopped by the winds and most are running late. Some lines such as the Tokaido, Shonan Shinjuku and Yokosuka lines have been halted for the entire morning. Some poor buggers had to spend the night on the train, as they were stopped at several stations and unable to move.

There have been several injuries, some from glass being blown in (even on a couple of trains!), and from trees, poles and parts of roofs falling. Although we we warned to stay away from all rivers, one man died having a gawk at Tamagawa river. Tamagawa is beyond capacity and overflowed it’s banks.

We will continue to get rain here as the typhoon works it way up the rest of Honshu to Hokkaido. Shizuoka was probably hit the worst.

Update 7:22am: Yay! Water has just spurted back on. We can now flush the toilet again!
