Water Sports for Boys

So last night when we dropped around to J-Mum's I was subjected to watching the finals of the boys' high school synchronized swimming championships. Actually I didn't object too much to seeing toned, tanned young things in speedos racing around on screen. Boys' synchro swimming has become quite a big thing here. It really all started with a movie called "Water Boys" an entertaining piece of fluff of a film. The popularity of "Water Boys" lead to the TV drama of "Water Boys"...which then led to a second series, as well as this "real" competition series with teams of boys competing from different schools.

The amount of effort which seems to go into it is pretty astounding. And yes there were tears last night for the team which took second place... water boys trailers a rather entertaining review of the movie official Water Boys 2 TV site at Fuji TV

OMG, the boy in the photo looks so tortured .. perhaps sync swimming is, after all, just another gruesome and strenuous contact support.

(ps. ignorant question, but, are male sync swimmers perceived as gay?)

Well it certainly does seem as if it is indeed a strenuous sport - although treated as more non-athletic because it involves glittery costumes and layers of make-up (at least for the girls).

Male sync swimmers don’t seem to be perceived as gay - but they throw in a few gay talento on the programs just because it’s guarenteed they’ll coo all over the boys in tight mini-speedos. In the first film the main guy manages to win the heart of the girl thru sync swimming…
